Our Mission:

The DeKalb Council for the Arts is a non-government, not-for-profit arts group with the mission to promote the arts, emerging artists and arts in education in DeKalb County. The DeKalb Council for the Arts affirms that:

  • The arts are an essential part of the personal lives of DeKalb residents.
  • The arts are an important element of the economic health of DeKalb.
  • Arts education should be encouraged in public schools and higher education.
  • Support for the arts should come from all aspects of the community.
  • The arts and arts education should be available to all residents of DeKalb.

Executive Director Valetta Anderson is an award winning playwright and teaching artist, as well as an excellent arts administrator. Her plays have been produced by Atlanta’s 7 Stages Theatre and Jomandi Productions, and Pittsburgh’s Kuntu Repertory Theatre. She has enjoyed workshop productions at Atlanta’s Horizon Theatre, New York City’s Women Playwrights and Productions, and Seattle’s ACT Theatre. Her awards include AT&T:Onstage, Hermann Kesten Stipend (Nuremberg, Germany), and Rockefeller Foundation’s New Play Development Grant. She is former Executive Director of the Southeast Playwrights Project (SEPP) and a member the Dramatists Guild.

Rodger French has served as DCA's Executive Assistant since 1997. Rodger is also an accomplished accordionist, percussionist, and juggler. Since 1978 he has worked as a theatre musical director, orchestra musician, Vaudeville entertainer, and clowning instructor.

Rodger has also performed at the White House. For no money. Twice.

Brittany Babbitt is a Creative Writing major, Studio Art minor at Agnes Scott College. She began her internship with DCA in February 2006. A 2005 Member of the National Scholars Honor Society, Brittany brings her love of writing, surrealist and Early Renaissance art and photography to DCA, where she will explore the differences between professional writing and creative writing.
